There’s never been a better time to dress like a retro soccer star. Designer Grace Wales Bonner has made a name by taking sportswear from ordinary to sublime—including her red-hot partnership with Adidas. And now, New York new-wave prep label Rowing Blazers has teamed up with English sportswear brand Umbro on a capsule that furthers the vibe.
The collaboration features classic Umbro styles reimagined through the brightly colored and boldly patterned Rowing Blazers lens. That means stripes in eye-catching primary colors, zig-zags of blue and red, and loud checkered prints. At the core of the collection are a coach’s jacket, jersey, and perhaps the most iconic of Umbro styles—the soccer short.
The partnership comes to you via Greenhouse, Foot Locker’s “incubator” program that teams up longstanding brands with newer labels. It has already rendered projects between designer Anwar Carrots and Crocs, Rhude and Starter, Alife and Reebok, among many others. This pairing of a young preppy brand like Rowing Blazers and a forever-classic soccer label like Umbro feels pitch-perfect within this world.
This collection will be available March 26 via Rowing Blazers and the Greenhouse app, and will hit Foot Locker stores next month. There is a good reason why everyone from 1990s British rock stars to GQ editors has embraced dressing like a soccer star: the look is timelessly cool.
